Hello and welcome to a special bite sized edition of Books and Chat. I'm Christina Young and today we're shining a light on a book that created some of the most fascinating discussion at the Gloucester Book Club. The book is called Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. It was one of our non fiction picks this year and it truly interested us. It's not a self help book with a strict list of rules. Instead it's a breathtaking explanation of why sleep is arguably the most important factor in our physical and mental health.
It sparked so many aha moments for our members and it's a book we would consistently recommend. So how many of you have ever bragged about getting by on just five or six hours? Or scroll through your phone in bed telling yourself you'll just wind down for a few more minutes? I know I have. But what if I told you that this thing we all do or don't do enough of is a silent superpower? According to neuroscientist Matthew Walker, sleep is a non negotiable biological necessity, and today we're going to explore why his research is so compelling.
One of the biggest revelations for our book club was how Walker breaks down the architecture of sleep into a repeating 90 minute cycle with two main players. So there's NREM sleep, which is non rapid eye movement, and R.E.M. sleep which is rapid eye movement. So think of NREM sleep as the file saving function of your brain. So this is the deep slow wave sleep. It's when your brain takes all the new memories and learnings from the day and transfers them from the short term vulnerable storage area, which is the hippocampus, to the long term secure hard drive, which is the neocortex.
It's essentially hitting the save button on your day. This is why sleep is so critical after learning something new. It literally solidifies those memories and it makes them stick. Then there's R.E.M. sleep. So if N R.E.M. is the librarian filing things away, then R.E.M. is the mad genius artist connecting ideas in wild and new ways. So this is the dreaming stage. During R.E.M. Sleep. Your brain is highly active. It takes all those newly saved memories and starts to interlink them with your entire back catalog of past experiences.
This is where creativity happens. It's the reason you often wake up with a solution to a problem that you were wrestling with the day before. Your brain, offline and undisturbed, has been making unexpected and insightful connections, so you need both NREM to save the raw data and R.E.M. to build the web of wisdom. Skimp on sleep and you're not just tired, you're losing memories and stifling your creativity. This is where the book really provoked discussion. It's the terrifying cost of not sleeping.
So Walker presents a mountain of evidence that sleep deprivation is linked to a truly shocking range of health problems. It's not just about being groggy. First, your brain. Lack of sleep is like a neurological poison. It impairs your attention, memory and decision making, equivalent to being legally drunk. It also literally prevents your brain from clearing out a toxic protein called beta amyloid, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease. So sleep is like a power cleanse for your brain every night, then your body.
The research shows that short sleep predicts the shorter life, so routinely sleeping less than six or seven hours a night demolishes your immune system, doubling your risk of cancer. It's a major factor in whether you develop diabetes, as it disrupts your blood sugar levels. It increases the likelihood of coronary arteries becoming blocked, setting you up for cardiovascular disease. And perhaps most surprisingly for dieters, Walker says the shorter you sleep, the more you weigh. Sleep deprivation increases the hunger hormone ghrelin and decreases the satiety hormone leptin.
You feel hungrier and you never feel full. So late night craving isn't a lack of willpower, it's an actual biological drive. So the message is clear, there is no major physiological system in your body that isn't optimally enhanced by sleep or severely degraded when you shortchange it. So after all that, what's the take away? The book doesn't give a rigid 10 step program, but understanding the why makes the how feel much more urgent and logical. And here's what resonated most with our group. So number one is stick to a schedule.
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends, so that regularity anchors your sleep rhythm #2 embrace the darkness. Melatonin, the sleep hormone, needs darkness to be released an hour before bed, dim the lights, get blackout curtains and most importantly number three, ban blue light before bed. This was a big wake up call for us. The blue light from phones, tablets, and laptops tricks your brain into thinking it's still daytime suppressing melatonin. So Walker's advice is simple.
Turn them off an hour before bed. That may be quite difficult for some people, especially if you're in the habit of checking your emails or looking on social media when you're actually in bed #4 is cool down. Your body needs to drop its core temperature to initiate sleep, so you need a cool bedroom around 65°F or 18° C is ideal #5 is avoid caffeine and alcohol. So caffeine has a half life of, would you believe it, 5 to 6 hours so that 3:00 in the afternoon. Coffee is still at 50% power at 9:00 at night.
And while alcohol might make you pass out, it fragments your sleep and annihilates your precious R.E.M. Sleep. So reading Why We Sleep felt like being let in on a vital secret. So Matthew Walker's work makes an undeniable case. Sleep is the foundation on which health is built, not an inconvenience to be traded for more waking hours. It changed the conversation in our book club, and I hope it gives you a new lens through which to view your own nightly rest. It's not about perfection, but it is about understanding the incredible value of what happens when your head hits the pillow.
